Painting on Silk
Size: 80 x 90 cm
Salome’s dance before Herod with the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter led medieval Christian artists to depict her as the personification of the lascivious woman, a temptress who lures men away from salvation. Christian traditions depict her as an icon of dangerous female seductiveness. Other elements of Christian tradition concentrate on her lighthearted and cold foolishness that, according to the gospels, led to John the Baptist's death.
This artwork is from my series of batik works “Women's Whims”. To my opinion, Salome’s action was a whim, the one which cost was a human life. Is she happy about it now? Obviously not… She looks away, her face is sad, she feels sorry now, but nothing can be changed.
This artwork is made with use of complicated author’s technique of batik and painting. This artwork is painted on the natural silk cloth with professional German silk paints, batik textile dyes, waxes, etc. (KREUL Javana). The paint is water based, has no smell, and is fade and wash resistant (after fixing).
Signed on the front.
